Cryin' Shame is a bay area music project featuring the singing and songwriting talents of Dan Newitt and Stacey Erdman and bass thumping by Kevin Kelsey. Soulful, sweet, and sometimes a little sad, their blend of styles sits comfortably right in the heart of Americana, mixing country, rock, blues and folk influences to create a rich background which showcases their tight harmonies and instrumental virtuosity.

Stacey and Dan are both seasoned performers with decades of experience. Dan is an alumnus of the IBMA-showcase-featured modern bluegrass band StrungOver!, and currently performs with California Music Award-winners The Cowlicks. Stacey has long been a staple of the west coast music scene, and has served on the board of directors of the California Coast Music Camp, a musical mecca for players and pros of all levels. Stacey has shared the stage with such greats as Orrin Starr, Radim Zenkl, David Nelson Band, the New Orleans Radiators & Tommy Malone. Stacey and Dan are joined by Kevin Kelsey on Bass, and consummate percussionist Ken Owen has been known to make an appearance from time to time. Cryin Shame are guaranteed to grab you in just the right way and remind you what it is you love about music.

Dave Hebert (AKA A’Bear), guitarist and singer, is originally a native of Manitou Springs, Colorado. Dave has spent his musical career in many genres, including rock, reggae, folk, blues, and bluegrass. Right out of college, he toured nationally with mentor and close family friend reggae recording artist John Bayley. Dave is a founding member of Brother Kind, who opened for Merl Saunders and David Grisman at Red Rocks (7/7/97).The group still reunites every so often in Colorado. Currently a resident of Denver, Colorado, Dave relentlessly works on his many different musical projects. When not touring with Melvin Seals and JGB, he performs with many original bands of his own creation such as Working Man’s Grass, a bluegrass Dead band; he also plays solo acoustic gigs throughout the Southwest; and finally, Dave plays lead guitar and vocals for Xtra Ticket, Arizona’s premier Grateful Dead band. Versatility is his trademark. Whether it's his own songs or songs from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band catalog, Dave not only captures the feel of songs, he often takes the musical risk of breathing new life into an old familiar tune and puts the A’Bear signature on it. That's the adventure and this is his journey. Check out www.daveabear.com for more info!

Jordan Feinstein is already recognized as one of the most talented and sought after keyboardists in the Bay Area. He is the creator and driving force behind "Jordan and The Ritual" a unique California sound that has been described as a mix of Soul, Funk, Rock, and Groove.  He regularly lends his soulful keyboard stylings to many local bands like: Stu Allen and Mars Hotel, Shantytown, La Gente, Lonesome Locomotive, Fenton Coolfoot, Yonat, and others. He has also played with national acts such as G Love and Special Sauce, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Anders Osborn, Brett Dennen, George Porter Jr. and many more. www.jordanandtheritual.com

Maurice Tani is a "rye-to-romantic, supercalifornigraphic" singer-songwriter specializing in a cinema-for-the-blind style. His band, Maurice Tani & 77 El Deora has been the source of untold, but exquisite suffering in the Bay Area for over 10 years.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Tani was just a bit too young for the Summer of Love, but was still profoundly influenced by the California culture that gave the world surf guitar, the Bakersfield sound, psychedelic rock and songwriters like Randy Newman, Merle Haggard and Brian Wilson

Barely into his twenties and hungry for experience, he moved to central Texas to work the hardcore country, blues and rock circuit between Austin and Dallas, playing five sets a night, seven nights a week for months at a time, eventually making connections that led to his moving on to New York City just as the punk rock scene of CBGBs and Max's Kansas City was exploding in Lower Manhattan. By 1977 he was back in San Francisco and began a stretch of five years and four critically acclaimed albums with ex-Flamin' Groovies front man Roy Loney's band, The Phantom Movers.

Through the '80s and '90s, Maurice was the lead guitarist and a featured vocalist for Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra and Big Bang Beat, both large, (12-18 piece) dance bands that gained worldwide exposure from a 2 hour PBS New Years Eve tri-mulcast(2 television stations with different views and FM stereo radio audio all broadcasting simultaneously) that was ran annually for many years on public TV in the US and Europe. ZPMO won the Bammy Award for Best Independent Album of 1985. After 15+ years of touring, Tani was ready for a change and made the decision to return to his roots in original music.

Since making the shift back to songwriting in 1999, Maurice has spent the past 15 years as an active part of the California alt-country/Americana scene. Fronting his own bands, Calamity & Main, then 77 El Deora, he has produced a series of albums for himself and others and constructed a repertoire of “rye” humor and romantic rumination. Tani now has 7 albums to his credit. The two latest are the studio produced “Blue Line”, and an album of acoustic duos and trios with bassist Mike Anderson, “Two Stroke”

“This is thoughtful, heart-wrenching stuff about human asteroids that wonder where and how they lost their way and if there is a GPS that works. …darkly funny comments on power, desire, adrenalin, ambivalence, and narco squad surveillance.” -Jeep Rosenberg, Freight Train Boogie

“Tani's songs sound like buried treasures. ...He has a quality to his singing that is closer to a Raul Malo or a Roy Orbison, almost a classic cabaret voice, that brings a haunting feeling to many of his songs. His vocals on “Radio City” build on a form that Tani describes “as cinema for the blind”. You can imagine driving along a desolate road when this song comes on the radio “ a lost-love song where the protagonist is an all night disc jockey who laments that he has squandered his chance at love and finds himself alone and lonely in a one way conversation with thousands of people who only know his voice." -Robert Sproul, No Depression

Pam Brandon is a Vocalist, Bassist and a 25-year veteran of the San Francisco music scene. Over the years Pam’s vocal talent and performing style has won over audiences both in the US and in Europe, from intimate cafĂ© performances to festival stages, and has collaborated with artists within a broad range of genres from bluegrass to symphony chorales, from Peter Rowan to Lavay Smith. Originally from England, her early influences in folk, jazz and bluegrass music can be heard in her voice as she weaves her unique style through varied material. She currently fronts the San Francisco bluegrass band, Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys as guitarist and vocalist, and is band leader and bassist in her jazz combo The Monroe Trio and local blues and rock & Roll ne’er do wells, The Luxomatics, appearing weekly at San Francisco’s historic Club Deluxe. Her career includes a ten-year tenure with legendary local swing bands, The Chazz Cats and Lost Weekend Western Swing Band, and over the past seven years she been a musical muse and sparring partner for Maurice Tani and 77 El Deora.

Glenn Houston - Glenn has received the “Best Guitarist” award for 2009 from the Northern California Bluegrass Society. He is an accomplished player with influences ranging from T-Bone Walker, Albert King, B.B. King and Michael Bloomfield to Doc Watson, Albert Lee and James Burton. A co-founder in 1979 of the group Hearts on Fire, Glenn was nominated for "Best Lead Guitar" by the California Country Music Association (CCMA). While Glenn was with the group, Hearts on Fire earned a prestigious Bay Area Music Award (Bammie).
Over the years, Glenn has shared billing with Hank Williams, Jr., Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, The David Grisman Quintet, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Ricky Skaggs, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and The Tubes. In recent years, he has performed live and in the recording studio with Grammy Award winner Ramblin' Jack Elliott; he co-founded and played lead guitar for the critically acclaimed acoustic group The Waybacks; he has performed with blues legends Mark Naftalin and Nick Gravenites; and he has earned a second nomination for "Best Lead Guitar" from the CCMA. And yes, he plays left-handed upside down.

Travis Jones - Travis’ musical background and history reads like a William Faulkner novel. He began singing gospel music at age four with his mother Lottie Mae Adams, a blues singer who recorded several discs on Paula Records. Travis became known not only for his vocal abilities but also for his telling of old testament bible stories at revivals and tent meetings all across the south. He started his first group at sixteen – a Paul Revere and the Raiders tribute band. Travis served 6 years in the US Army; he was stationed in Europe where he performed with the soul and funk band Smoke, which eventually became the back up band for the famous R&B group The Manhattans (“Let’s Just Kiss and Say Goodbye”). Upon leaving the armed forces, Europe, and Smoke, Travis made his way to Northern California where he has resided since 1979.

During his time in California, he has performed with a wide array of artists. He’s shared the stage with Asleep at the Wheel and Waylon Jennings – Night Ranger and the Doobie Brothers - John Hartford and Levon Helm, just to name a few. He has recorded with various artists, as well as releasing two self titled albums – “Lost Highway, The Legendary Music of Hank Williams” and “Dance All Night” – along with five CD releases with Houston Jones. Travis lives in Alameda CA, on his sailboat, with Samson the wonderdog.

***********************************************

In the year 2000, Glenn Houston and Travis Jones began performing as a duet, honing their chops and developing their repertoire as part of their plan to put together a new band. With the addition of bass and drums in 2001, that band was launched as Houston Jones.

In the past decade plus, the band has released seven CDs and has garnered international attention with airplay on over 70 radio stations. Rave reviews include that of the San Francisco Chronicle's David Wiegand, who termed the band "a confluence of sublime talent". Check out their newest release: "Minotaur".

Please join us for a rare opportunity to enjoy a concert by the two gentlemen who started it all. It has been years since Glenn and Travis have performed regularly in public as a duet, but the magic and musical chemistry that launched that great band is better than ever.
