ABOUT THE DUO: Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, respectively, singer-songwriter Melody Walker and picker extraordinaire Jacob Groopman have fused their influences into a style they like to call “Americali.” They define it as Americana with a California twist, but of course, it’s much more. Drawing from diverse genres and provocative songwriting yet staying close to their American folk roots, the duo create literate music that honors tradition, yet sounds completely of the moment. Fresh off winning the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest, and Telluride and RockyGrass competition wins with their bluegrass project Front Country, Melody and Jacob have been tearing it up in 2013 and just released their first Duo record, "We Made It Home", produced by Grammy-winning bluegrass legend Laurie Lewis.

Robin has recorded or performed with the Beach Boys, Ry Cooder, Marty Balin, and Bo Diddley. Robin and Mark toured together with Bob Weir & RatDog for many years. Mark has also toured/recorded with artists such as Dave Mason and Delaney Bramlett, in addition to pop acts such as Sophie B. Hawkins and the Rembrandts. Lebo is a founding member of ALO (formerly Animal Liberation Orchestra), and has opened for/toured with Jack Johnson, G Love, and Galactic

MARK KARAN BIO
Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. For the last twelve years, he has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins.

Mark also tours with an array of amazing musicians in his own “Mark Karan’s Buds”, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring.

Mark’s debut album, “Walk Through the Fire” was released in 2009 to critical acclaim, and features very special guests Delaney Bramlett, Bill Payne, Mike Finnigan, Pete Sears, John Molo, Hutch Hutchinson, The Persuasions, The Rowan Brothers, and many more. He is in demand as both a studio musician and producer, having produced numerous albums for other artists, and recorded or composed a wide variety of music for film, television, and music libraries. His contributions to TV alone can currently be heard on over 15 networks and internationally in over 25 countries.

2012 saw Mark launch a residency at the newly reopened Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley (CA), where he delivered sold out shows with a variety of local and celebrity musicians, including Huey Lewis, members of Furthur, The Mother Hips, ALO, Primus, Roy Rogers, The Waybacks and more.

Since then, Mark has launched his new band “Mark Karan’s Buds”, and is planning the release of several new CDs as well as touring extensively throughout this year and next. The floating cast of characters that make up Mark’s “Buds” include Robin Sylvester (Bob Weir & Ratdog), Mookie Siegel (David Nelson band, New Riders of the Purple Sage), Wally Ingram (David Lindley, Steve Kimock, Eric Burdon), Danny Eisenberg (Ryan Adams, Mother Hips), Bobby Vega (Zero, Etta James, Sly Stone), Paul Olguin, John Hanes, Billy Lee Lewis (Roy Rogers’ delta rhythm kings, Tommy Castro) and more.

In 2013 and 2014 you can see Mark jamming with the psychedelic Bob Dylan-based “Ghosts of Electricity” (featuring Mark, Stu Allen, Robin Sylvester, Mookie Siegel, Greg Anton & Pat Nevins), and “the Rock Collection”, a loose, fun group based on the soulful chemistry between Mark, Lebo (ALO), Robin Sylvester & Greg Anton. Keep a lookout for frequent Terrapin Crossroads guest appearances with Phil Lesh and the Terrapin family band and Terrapin All-Stars.

Recently Mark has also discovered a real connection to his acoustic side and has been performing regularly at a variety of intimate, acoustic “house concerts” to delighted audiences...

Much more to come... Watch this exciting new chapter in Mark’s career

Stu Allen moved to the Bay Area in 2005 to join Melvin Seals & The JGB Band, of which he was the lead vocalist/guitarist for the next seven years. During this time he has become one of the leading figures in the jam band and Grateful Dead-inspired community, expressing his flavor of music through a variety of projects. He has fronted a number of Dead tribute acts, including a tour with the nationally touring Dark Star Orchestra. This path has culminated in the formation of his current project, Stu Allen & Mars Hotel, which was birthed hosting the weekly Grateful Dead Night at Ashkenaz in Berkeley, and now plays around the Northern California area. He belongs to Bay Area favorites, The Ghosts of Electricity, a tribute to the music of Bob Dylan

Glenn Houston - Glenn has received the “Best Guitarist” award for 2009 from the Northern California Bluegrass Society. He is an accomplished player with influences ranging from T-Bone Walker, Albert King, B.B. King and Michael Bloomfield to Doc Watson, Albert Lee and James Burton. A co-founder in 1979 of the group Hearts on Fire, Glenn was nominated for "Best Lead Guitar" by the California Country Music Association (CCMA). While Glenn was with the group, Hearts on Fire earned a prestigious Bay Area Music Award (Bammie).
Over the years, Glenn has shared billing with Hank Williams, Jr., Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, The David Grisman Quintet, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Ricky Skaggs, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and The Tubes. In recent years, he has performed live and in the recording studio with Grammy Award winner Ramblin' Jack Elliott; he co-founded and played lead guitar for the critically acclaimed acoustic group The Waybacks; he has performed with blues legends Mark Naftalin and Nick Gravenites; and he has earned a second nomination for "Best Lead Guitar" from the CCMA. And yes, he plays left-handed upside down.

Travis Jones - Travis’ musical background and history reads like a William Faulkner novel. He began singing gospel music at age four with his mother Lottie Mae Adams, a blues singer who recorded several discs on Paula Records. Travis became known not only for his vocal abilities but also for his telling of old testament bible stories at revivals and tent meetings all across the south. He started his first group at sixteen – a Paul Revere and the Raiders tribute band. Travis served 6 years in the US Army; he was stationed in Europe where he performed with the soul and funk band Smoke, which eventually became the back up band for the famous R&B group The Manhattans (“Let’s Just Kiss and Say Goodbye”). Upon leaving the armed forces, Europe, and Smoke, Travis made his way to Northern California where he has resided since 1979.

During his time in California, he has performed with a wide array of artists. He’s shared the stage with Asleep at the Wheel and Waylon Jennings – Night Ranger and the Doobie Brothers - John Hartford and Levon Helm, just to name a few. He has recorded with various artists, as well as releasing two self titled albums – “Lost Highway, The Legendary Music of Hank Williams” and “Dance All Night” – along with five CD releases with Houston Jones. Travis lives in Alameda CA, on his sailboat, with Samson the wonderdog.

***********************************************

In the year 2000, Glenn Houston and Travis Jones began performing as a duet, honing their chops and developing their repertoire as part of their plan to put together a new band. With the addition of bass and drums in 2001, that band was launched as Houston Jones.

In the past decade plus, the band has released six CDs and has garnered international attention with airplay on over 70 radio stations. Rave reviews include that of the San Francisco Chronicle's David Wiegand, who termed the band "a confluence of sublime talent".

Please join us for a rare opportunity to enjoy a concert by the two gentlemen who started it all. It has been years since Glenn and Travis have performed regularly in public as a duet, but the magic and musical chemistry that launched that great band is better than ever.
