Jim Brunberg and Jeff Pehrson met in a San Francisco cafe 23 years ago and almost immediately fell into a musical relationship. That connection has been responsible for 12 albums of original music, thousands upon thousands of miles on the road, a handful of awards, several ill-fated record deals and two houses built of broken B strings. The Box Set Duo has been entertaining audiences these many years with their powerful songs, brought to life by inspired guitar interplay and vocal harmonies that warm the senses.

The subject matter, as with the finest folk music, ranges from politics to relationships and everything in between, all delivered with a heart and wit that has brought rave reviews. Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls once described them as “a cross between the Grateful Dead and The Smothers Brothers.” Though Jim and Jeff have both been busy pursuing other endeavors the last few years, (Jim owns and operates his own music venue, Mississippi Studios in Portland, Oregon and Jeff is a member of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh’s band, Furthur), Box Set Duo will engage your hearts, burst your sides and leave you with a song on your mind.

Springhouse roams the Americana borderlands, from artsong to the roadhouse and places in between.
Chris Kee, principal songwriter and bassist for Houston Jones has formed a new Americana trio with Jane Selkye, writer of Blame Sally's song, "Big, Big Bed" and SF bay area pedal steel star David Phillips.
Chris Kee was the bassist/cellist and principal songwriter for Houston Jones, a five piece "high octane Americana" band with a passel of CDs to their credit. Kee's songs are simple and evocative. His song "Three Crow Town," inspired by a trip through Jane's grandparents' hometown of Longford, Kansas, can hush a festival crowd of thousands and bring tears to their eyes. Jim Lee of Dirty Linen says:
"While the members have always been virtuoso players and arrangers, it's the depth of Kee's songs that adds a defining element to the band."
Selkye's writing is inventive and image-rich. Her dynamic vocals range three octaves and her delivery is distinguished by subtle color and textures. Born in the Lone Star state and raised in California, Selkye's themes and delivery hint at her Bluebonnet pedigree.
One of the Bay Area's star pedal steel players, David Phillips' versatility puts him in a class by himself. He has worked with artists as varied as Tom Waits, Charlie Hunter and Johnny Paycheck. Both Phillips and Kee are touring members of Peter Rowan's Free Mexican Air Force. Phillips has been a featured pedal steel soloist with the San Francisco Symphony. A Georgia native, Phillips is a longtime resident of San Francisco. His southern roots are evident in the turns of musical phrase that color his traditional pedal steel and dobro playing. His inventive improvisational jazz work with Jack
West's Curvature betrays his natural modesty. It is this remarkable combination of tell-it-straight Country and Western style paired with a breathtaking sense of harmonic landscape that distinguishes the Springhouse sound.

*************************************************

‘Like Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones, San Francisco’s own Monica Pasqual proves that strong songwriting and stirring singing will take command of just about any stylistic setting’.  – Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian

‘Monica Pasqual may already be familiar to some locals as part of Blame Sally.  Solo, her sweet, clear voice dominates an album full of dreamy pop with some distinct Gallic and Spanish touches.  “This Cold Desire” is in the same vein as Sarah McLachlan’s work – acoustic pop/rock with a distinctly feminine sensibility.  It’s beautiful stuff’.  - Kirsty Evans, East Bay Express
Currently a member of the popular all-woman band, Blame Sally, Monica Pasqual has had a prolific career making music since the mid-90’s.  With a background in classical piano and her current side-career composing music for film and television, Pasqual’s recent solo material has focused on haunting music that evokes a distinct sense of atmosphere and mood.  Never content to write a simple love song, she makes the political personal and the very personal universal, with yearning song-poems that explore her sense of place, love, loss, war and dreams.
Pasqual has performed across the US and Europe extensively, has won 6 Independent Music Awards for both her solo work and in Blame Sally as well as several Emmy’s for television music.  In addition to live performance, she is currently teaching songwriting classes and mentoring artists and musicians.

Monica Pasqual and the Handsome Brunettes includes firebrand Pam Delgado of Blame Sally on percussion and vocals as well as the phenomenally talented Josh McClain on cello.

LAUREN MURPHY- Baton Rouge, La. born Touring artist, Lauren Murphy is best known for her background vocals with the San Francisco based band Zero (Steve Kimock, Robert Hunter, Judge Murphy), & as band leader/main composer of Lansdale Station(2005-2013), the award winning act she established with her late husband, Judge. Relocating from the Bay Area to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 2012, her recent compositions are notably some of the best in her career, and quite a buzz is circulating on social media and in the press. Her shows have been largely sold out, thanks to the popularity of new songs “El Dorado,” “Snow on the Dogwoods” and “Sweet Louisa”. A classically trained musician who studied at LSU, Lauren has mostly worked in the rock & roll arena. Mourning the death of her singing partner, husband Judge Murphy (9/15/2013), she has turned back toward her love of the warm toned acoustic music she began her career with over 15 years ago. During that time she’s worked with some of the industry’s best and played many destination venues & festivals. Her music can be heard on main stream & public radio stations around the world. Murphy is currently recording her new CD with Grammy Nominated Producer, Mooka Rennick of Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, Ca. It will feature an all-star lineup of players she's worked with over the years, including Will Kimbrough & Mark Karan. Compared to Patty Griffin, EmmyLou Harris, & Grace Slick, with the passion of Janis Joplin, Murphy is completely unique in her vocal stylings. Brassy, sensitive, and powerful, she captivates her audience with finely crafted tales that span the gambit of the human condition. When she isn’t touring, Lauren enjoys working on her property in the tiny mountain town of Apple Hill California, with her young daughter.

He has fronted a number of Dead tribute acts, including a tour with the nationally touring Dark Star Orchestra. This path has culminated in the formation of his current project, Stu Allen & Mars Hotel, which was birthed hosting the weekly Grateful Dead Night at Ashkenaz in Berkeley, and now plays around the Northern California area. Stu regularly plays with Phil Lesh at the Grateful Dead bassist's Terrapin Crossroads. He belongs to Bay Area favorites, The Ghosts of Electricity, a tribute to the music of Bob Dylan

Glenn Houston - Glenn has received the “Best Guitarist” award for 2009 from the Northern California Bluegrass Society. He is an accomplished player with influences ranging from T-Bone Walker, Albert King, B.B. King and Michael Bloomfield to Doc Watson, Albert Lee and James Burton. A co-founder in 1979 of the group Hearts on Fire, Glenn was nominated for "Best Lead Guitar" by the California Country Music Association (CCMA). While Glenn was with the group, Hearts on Fire earned a prestigious Bay Area Music Award (Bammie).
Over the years, Glenn has shared billing with Hank Williams, Jr., Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, The David Grisman Quintet, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Ricky Skaggs, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and The Tubes. In recent years, he has performed live and in the recording studio with Grammy Award winner Ramblin' Jack Elliott; he co-founded and played lead guitar for the critically acclaimed acoustic group The Waybacks; he has performed with blues legends Mark Naftalin and Nick Gravenites; and he has earned a second nomination for "Best Lead Guitar" from the CCMA. And yes, he plays left-handed upside down.

Travis Jones - Travis’ musical background and history reads like a William Faulkner novel. He began singing gospel music at age four with his mother Lottie Mae Adams, a blues singer who recorded several discs on Paula Records. Travis became known not only for his vocal abilities but also for his telling of old testament bible stories at revivals and tent meetings all across the south. He started his first group at sixteen – a Paul Revere and the Raiders tribute band. Travis served 6 years in the US Army; he was stationed in Europe where he performed with the soul and funk band Smoke, which eventually became the back up band for the famous R&B group The Manhattans (“Let’s Just Kiss and Say Goodbye”). Upon leaving the armed forces, Europe, and Smoke, Travis made his way to Northern California where he has resided since 1979.

During his time in California, he has performed with a wide array of artists. He’s shared the stage with Asleep at the Wheel and Waylon Jennings – Night Ranger and the Doobie Brothers - John Hartford and Levon Helm, just to name a few. He has recorded with various artists, as well as releasing two self titled albums – “Lost Highway, The Legendary Music of Hank Williams” and “Dance All Night” – along with five CD releases with Houston Jones. Travis lives in Alameda CA, on his sailboat, with Samson the wonderdog.

***********************************************

In the year 2000, Glenn Houston and Travis Jones began performing as a duet, honing their chops and developing their repertoire as part of their plan to put together a new band. With the addition of bass and drums in 2001, that band was launched as Houston Jones.

In the past decade plus, the band has released six CDs and has garnered international attention with airplay on over 70 radio stations. Rave reviews include that of the San Francisco Chronicle's David Wiegand, who termed the band "a confluence of sublime talent".

Please join us for a rare opportunity to enjoy a concert by the two gentlemen who started it all. It has been years since Glenn and Travis have performed regularly in public as a duet, but the magic and musical chemistry that launched that great band is better than ever.

STU ALLEN
The ever-popular and always inventive Stu Allen & Mars Hotel may include some familiar songs (especially of the Dead variety) as well as Allen’s own compositions, which singer and guitarist Allen and crew use as launching pads for flights of improvisation. Allen is one of the leading figures in the jam band and Dead-inspired community, featured in such groups as Front Street, Melvin Seals & JGB, and Workingman’s Ed. He has performed at the annual Jerry Garcia Day concerts in San Francisco’s McLaren Park and even led an entire day at the Dead on the Creek festival featuring his various bands. He has also played with Bob Weir, Steve Kimock, Warren Haynes, and numerous other prominent musicians.

Allen, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, joined Melvin Seals & JGB in June 2004 and appears on the “Keepers of the Flame” album. With his uncanny improvising skill and his commitment to making every performance unique, Allen has made extensive contributions to the jam music scene. In the early 1990s, he co-founded the Minnesota-based acoustic-electric jam band Blue Man Jive, which issued one CD, “Playing God.” He was also a founder of the Jones Gang, Minneapolis’ premier Grateful Dead tribute band. Now a resident of San Francisco, Allen continues to explore, experiment, create, and recreate within a variety of musical styles, many of them Dead-linked.

PAT NEVINS
Pat Nevins began his musical career in Chicago. He has been performing live shows in the San Francisco area for ten years now, and is known for his heartfelt vocals, deep soul, and rhythm guitar work. Pat performs his own compositions, and is loved by Bay Area music fans for taking on both the acoustic and electric sides of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Gram Parsons, to name a few. He has appeared and worked with many top Bay Area musicians including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. In 2003, Pat released Shakey Zimmerman, a ten song tribute to Neil Young and Bob Dylan, which featured a fabulous backing band including pedal steel and guitar ace, Barry Sless. Currently he plays with Echo Trail, as well as alongside Stu Allen and Mark Karan in The Ghosts of Electricity.
